Developing Or Destroying Da Lat?

By Joe Fotalattee

Tuoi Tre is reporting officials in Da Lat intend to set up a new night market and open a casino, the municipal administration announced during the release of its night-time economic development plan.

According to the plan recently submitted by local authorities to the Lam Dong Province government for approval, the city has selected 16 potential locations for facilities that would constitute its night-time economy for the 2023-30 period.

The new establishment would include a modern night shopping area replacing the current night market in the city center and a casino at Thung Lung Tinh Yeu (Valley of Love), a well-known destination, city authorities said on Wednesday.

The new night market would be located at the Anh Sang (Light) Garden on Nguyen Van Cu Street in the city’s downtown area, about 100 meters from the existing night market on Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street.

The market would have souvenir stands, typical Da Lat commodities, street food, and facilities for cultural and recreational activities, including painting, artwork, magic performances, and dancing.

Meanwhile, the proposed casino, which would be the first of its kind in Da Lat, is expected to open in Thung Lung Tinh Yeu as part of a recreational complex covering the valley and the hills of Mong Mo and Thong Nhat.

If approved by the provincial authorities, the complex project will be developed by Da Lat-based Thanh Thanh Cong Lam Dong Tourism JSC.

International Tourism Is Up 3700%

Satire By Joe Fotalatte

Tourism in Vietnam is reportedly up 3,700% by comparing domestic tourism numbers to international tourism numbers of 1918 during the Spanish flu pandemic.

Director of ToursForYou in District 1, Max E. Pad, told The Beat, he is happy with these latest numbers. “These days we don’t even have to do statistical tricks like counting French colonialist occupiers in Sapa as tourists.”

Pad says inflating dismal numbers has been easier than ever. “Every time I drive from my home in District 3 to District 1, I count myself as a domestic tourist. Betty from accounting is a tourist in like 6 districts before she even shows up late.”

International tourists seem as excited about the new numbers. Philip McCracken, an English teacher in various centers said, “There are like 70,000 international tourists this past year, and I am so proud to be 12 of them as I bribed officers in Moc Bai.”

Tourism experts agree that the best part of doubling down on bad policy is that there is no accountability. “We can just pretend it is the same visa policy it has always been and if an entire industry collapses, at least we still have our jobs and can pat ourselves on the back,” Chuck McCrap, director of AMCHUM told The Beat.

Vietnam plans to consider visa policies similar to Cambodia, Thailand, and neighboring countries, which have fully rebounded their tourism industry. Tourism experts will discuss more for several months and then submit a draft proposal, which will be the news of the day since a new policy will still not exist.

Media Full Of Hot Air

Opinion By Joe Fotalattee

Anti-Biden, Pro-Trump Vietnamese media is at it again, pouncing on the opportunity to provide its readers with one-sided, outrage ignorance. (Our apologies for covering USA news, but we must once again correct the record.)

President Joe Biden was first briefed on the Chinese balloon last Tuesday. A day later he gave the military permission to shoot it down when it was over a place where there would be no danger of civilians being hurt by the flying debris.

Meanwhile, the Defense Department had said: “Chinese balloons briefly transited the continental United States at least three times during the prior administration.” Prior president Trump was either unaware of these breaches, or it is related to the overwhelming evidence that throughout his presidency Trump lacked the competence to be commander in chief. Trump’s incompetence was on display daily but perhaps most documented in the Mueller Report.

Despite the unfair media coverage and GOP criticism, Biden’s administration has since offered “to brief former top Trump administration officials on China’s surveillance program.”

China insisted that the object was a weather ship blown off course and refuted claims that it was being used for surveillance.

The US has refuted this assertion because the balloon was maneuverable and “had propellers on it.”

Vietnam Hopes To Prevent Internet Cable Problems

Tin Tuc reports General Secretary of the Vietnam Internet Association Vu The Binh said that in the next 5 years, Vietnam will probably need at least 2-3 more undersea cable routes to meet demand.  “The scenario that almost all undersea cable channels have problems is a very rare thing, we think that the carriers are less prepared for this situation. With more and more incidents of undersea fiber optic cables, the need to add new cables becomes more and more urgent,” Mr. Vu The Binh told Tin Tuc.

According to the Department of Telecommunications, Vietnam currently has 5 undersea fiber optic cable routes, while Thailand has 13, and Malaysia has more than 30 undersea fiber optic cable routes. Meanwhile, Singapore is the hub of the region. The problem of undersea fiber optic cables in Vietnam caused businesses to be affected by 30-40% of international traffic and had to expand to other land routes.

Caught Extorting Over 16,000 USD From Vietnamese American Over Sexy Images

by Joe Fotalattee

Vietnam+ is reporting Vo Van Hung was apprehended while threatening and extorting money from Ms. S (a Vietnamese American immigrant born in 1978). Hung had taken and threatened to share explicit digital photos and video. Hung was reported to be being held in a temporary detention facility by the Go Vap District Police in Ho Chi Minh City on the evening of February 2.

Initial research indicates that Hung became acquainted with Ms. S through social media sometime in October 2020 by chatting with Ms. S on Zalo and Facebook.
Hung demanded money from his mistress in a “hot” clip he threatened to release.

During this time, Hung and Ms. S. sensitively chatted on video with each other. During these times, Hung covertly recorded all of their private video chats.
Due to a lack of funds by around December 2021, Hung sent Ms. S. “Sexy” images of Ms. S. to ask Ms. S. to send money to Hung. When Ms. S. refused, Hung threatened to send pictures of Ms. S to her friends and shared them on social media as a form of intimidation.

Ms. S. was apprehensive about “hot” pictures and videos on social media and sharing them with her friends, so she sent Hung money many times. Hung tricked Ms. S into transferring more than 100 times and took more than 1.4 billion VND (16,000 USD). Hung inquired of Ms. S on February 1 to travel back to Vietnam and deliver 30,000,000 VND.
