Internet Cable Issues

By Joe Fotalattee

An Internet service provider (ISP) reported  to Tuoi Tre that four out of the five submarine Internet cable systems that link Vietnam to the rest of the world are having issues, with the most recent failure occurring on Saturday and seriously affecting users’ international connections.

On January 28, a cable break about 130 kilometers from a shoreline station in Singapore caused issues with the Intra Asia (IA) cable system, completely cutting off international data traffic from Vietnam to the city-state, according to the Internet service provider.

To connect Internet users in Singapore, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Japan, and Vietnam, this system, with a total length of 6,800 kilometers, has been in use since November 2009.

Additionally, it served as a crucial pathway for the transfer of Internet data from users in Vietnam and other nearby nations to the Americas and Europe.

The connection between Vietnam, Singapore, and Japan was disrupted on January 21 when an incident occurred on the S9 branch of the APG cable system that connects to Singapore.

In the Pacific Ocean, this line, which connects mainland China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand, and Singapore, spans about 10,400 kilometers.

Vaccines and Herd Immunity Bring End to “State of Emergency”

By Joe Fotalattee

Nearly three years after the US imposed preventive measures, the administration of US President Joe Biden announced on January 30 that the state of emergency would be lifted.

In contrast, Chinese health officials issued a warning on January 31 that the new sub-variant has the power to suppress immune responses, including those brought on by vaccinations. However, experts believe the recent outbreak in China will stop the Orthrus variant from spreading like wildfire.

The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stated that despite higher transferability and increased immune response resistance, the herd immunity reduces the risk of a sudden infection. The population of China has high levels of neutralizing antibodies against infection and reinfection.

The health authorities stated that due to the immune benefit from prior infections, “this variant will not cause a large-scale outbreak in the country in the short term,” adding that two variants are responsible for a significant number of outbreaks. Most of the current epidemic wave in China is BA. Fivepoint2 and BF. 7.

Researchers from Ohio State University have recently issued a warning that Orthrus’ resistance to antibodies is “extraordinary.”. This sub-variant was found to be able to evade the immune response induced by monovalent and bivalent mRNA vaccines, as well as antibodies induced by prior BA. 4 or BA. infection 5.

The Health Security Agency of the UK reported that Orthrus was responsible for one-third of infections over the previous week. Along with that, they watch XBB. The majority of cases in the US are now caused by 1.5, a strain that first appeared as Kraken last year. Only 1 percent of cases, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), are thought to be brought on by the Orthrus sub-variant.
