Why Vietnam Is Safe Compared To USA

Opinion by Nguyen Ayi

Gun violence is a major problem in the United States, with an average of 100 deaths per day due to firearms. In contrast, Vietnam has extremely strict gun laws and a low rate of gun-related deaths. The question is, why is there such a difference between the two countries?

It’s important to understand the cultural differences between the US and Vietnam. The US has a strong culture of individualism and the right to bear arms, whereas Vietnam has a collectivist culture and a strong emphasis on community safety.

Secondly, the availability of guns plays a major role. In the US, it’s relatively easy to obtain a gun, even for those with a history of mental illness or criminal activity. In Vietnam, however, it’s extremely difficult to obtain a gun legally, with only law enforcement officials and military personnel being allowed to carry firearms.

The role of government policy cannot be ignored. In the US, there is significant resistance to gun control measures due to the Second Amendment of the Constitution. In Vietnam, the government has taken a strong stance on gun control and has implemented strict laws to prevent the illegal possession of firearms.

Overall, the difference in gun violence rates between the US and Vietnam can be attributed to a combination of cultural differences, gun availability, and government policy. While there are certainly lessons that can be learned from Vietnam’s approach to gun control, it’s clear that significant changes are needed in the US to address the epidemic of gun violence.

With the rise of e-commerce, social media, and cloud services, the need for reliable and secure data storage and management has become increasingly vital. Vietnam’s Digital Transformation Journey

Vietnam has made significant progress in its digital transformation journey, with the government aiming to create a digital economy worth $43 billion by 2025. This ambitious goal has been fueled by the country’s young and tech-savvy population, which has embraced new technologies at a rapid pace. Vietnam’s internet penetration rate has reached 70%, and the country has over 60 million smartphone users.

However, this rapid digitalization has also brought new challenges, including the need for robust and secure data storage and management. Vietnam’s data center market is still in its early stages, but it is growing rapidly to meet this challenge.

Publisher Admits Repackaging Existing Reporting

By Joe Fotalattee

In an exclusive to The Beat, publisher Pete Blare admits that The Beat has no original reporting.

“In many ways, newspapers are yesterday’s internet, I like to think of The Beat as yesterday’s, yesterday’s internet”, Blare said with the confidence of a mountain climbing goat. “We are already getting over 5,000 unique hits per month, and my mom is dead so it can’t be her.”

Blare says several English outlets are doing exceptional journalism and “why not rehash their reporting?” He thinks a new provocative headline or explanation between the lines is enough to fool the general public that the site isn’t another blog in the wasteland, but an actual media outlet.

“I’ve been self-employed forever, so The Beat was just an attempt to fill a recent gap on my resume,” stated Blare.

The process was explained simply. First, they run some news articles through a translation application, then they attempt to re-write them in a Grammarly window. “We are essentially the ChatGTP of reporting, and that seems pretty hot right now,” Blare said with the enthusiasm of a Bui Vien massage gal luring in customers.

He views the cutting and pasting of existing content as extremely competitive. “There are very few outlets going outside of this model, like Saigoneer, Vietcera, Troi Tre, and VnExpress.” Blare says they are living in the past sending reporters to events, and that it is counter-intuitive to all the YouTube experts rehashing their content.

“They’ll never survive if they don’t adapt!”

Harvard Physicists Can’t Find TESOL Certificate

By Joe Fotalattee

Randy Johnson, 67, retired to Vietnam four years ago and looks to receive a work permit if he can only find his Teacher of English to Speakers of Other Language (TESOL) certificate from thirty years ago.

The Vietnam work permit, designed to ensure high-quality education, requires Johnson to have the certification, which anyone can buy on the internet with a few clicks.

Johnson was the Director of Science Teaching and Learning in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard for the past thirty years, and had a stint teaching ESL overseas in the 80s.

“I had received all of these certificates from companies trying to make a buck, but I had no idea how to teach until I spent a few years in a classroom,” Johnson told The Beat.

According to Johnson, he is proficient in TOEIC, TOEFL, IELTS, KET, GMAT, A-LEVELS, and SAT prep.

“Now Cambridge has repackaged the same thing they have been teaching for the last 300 years and are calling it Cambridge Unified New Tertiary. Parents keep asking me if I have a CUNT certificate but I just don’t know where I put it”, explained Johnson.

He admits that he also misplaces everyday items like his keys and wallet, but still has things important to him like a bowling trophy and his high school yearbook.

“If I knew I would have to humiliate myself in front of a bunch of kindergartners wetting themselves while I am wearing Depends to stay in a country, I would have saved the damn thing, or got a real certification like a CELTA.” Johnson calls it the only legitimate teaching certification next to a real license because it requires actual teaching of six whole hours.

Johnson’s plans to use this month’s social security check to buy a … Read more

Dog Track Finds Support In State-Sanctioned Gambling And Animal Abuse

Opinion by Joe Fotalattee

Vung Tau dog racing track is shutting down, but unfortunately, plans to reopen are in the works and 400 dogs are currently being exploited.

State-Sanctioned Gambling And Animal Abuse

While voters in the USA have nearly eliminated all dog racing with ballot initiatives, three states still allow the draconian sport: West Virginia, Arkansas, and Iowa. Vietnam is willing to be associated with such progressive states.

Due to the license expiration, Lam Son Dog Racecourse in Vung Tau City, which had a total investment of USD 5 million, will close on March 10.

On March 6, Sports and Entertainment Services Joint Stock Company (investor) announced it will relocate equipment at the Lam Son stadium racetrack. While it waits for the contract to be settled, the Ba Ria City Center will continue to raise and train close to 400 Greyhound dogs. A new dog racing track in Lam Dong is being built by the investor.

Two sessions per week were held at the Lam Son dog racetrack, and admission was 90,000 to 180,000 VND per person. The investor has staged nearly 1,500 races for 23 years, bringing in over 315 million spectators who purchased tickets to the stadium to watch and wager. According to the investor, they have already lost 205 billion VND and contributed more than 45 billion VND to the local economy.

The land will be planned with a sporting function after the Lam Son racetrack is relocated, according to the Ba Ria-Vung Tau Department of Culture and Sports.

The Green Park-Sports, which includes a 10,000-seat yard and the Sports Complex, is located on Cau Chay Street. The Department of Culture and Sports is proposing to move the dog racing school there. (Vung Tau City, Ward 11 and 12). VnExpress reported this location is ideal for … Read more

Factory Layoffs Afoot

By Joe Fotalattee

According to Ho Chi Minh City Social Insurance statistics, businesses in the city reported a decrease of more than 34,000 people in the first two months of the year. More than 16,300 people applied for unemployment benefits during this time, according to data from the City Employment Service Center. More than 500,000 people are anticipated to need to find employment in 2023.

The number of people enrolled in social insurance will decline at the start of the year, according to Mr. Tran Dung Ha, Deputy Director of Ho Chi Minh City Social Insurance, because workers returning to their hometowns did not stay in the city. But this year, there are more factors influencing the state of the global economy. As a result, businesses face challenges and have to cut back on both labor and production. By the end of January, more than 1,300 businesses in the entire city had been dissolved, declared bankrupt, or ceased operations.

Nguyen Van Lam, the deputy director of the city’s department of labor, invalids, and social affairs, determined that the labor market in the city is still favorable. Orders have fallen, particularly in the processing sector, which includes the production of wood, footwear, and textiles. However, based on the survey, the associations predict that orders from June to July will gradually stabilize.

Phan Thi Thanh Xuan, vice president of the Vietnam Leather, Footwear and Handbag Association (Lefaso), told VnExpress that the industry as a whole employs 1.5 million people across more than 2,000 businesses. Orders in the sector are currently still down by 30%. Therefore, factories must undoubtedly cut back on labor if they want to lower costs and meet the demand for the product. When orders pick up again, this will result in a labor shortage for businesses.

Real Estate Bailout Implemented In Phases

By Joe Fotalattee

The Ministry of Construction said it would stop proposing a credit package of 110,000 billion VND for social housing to focus on implementing the 120,000 billion VND package agreed upon by four state-owned commercial banks.

Regarding the package of VND 120,000 billion, Mr. Dao Minh Tu, Deputy Governor of the State Bank said that the agency is directing four commercial banks to implement general roadmaps and regulations. This is a commercial loan package, so businesses and home buyers who meet the conditions will be able to borrow.

Officials of the State Bank still believe that the VND 110 trillion credit plan proposed by the Ministry of Construction is necessary for the real estate market, but the source of funding for the credit plan is a problem.

Tu explained the difference between the mobilization rate and commercial bank loans to VnExpress. Interest hovered around 3% when the package loan rate was considered unattractive. Using this credit package, the banks had to reduce 1.5-2% of the said difference, so they would have very little reserves left. If other commercial banks participate in the future, the amount of this credit program will reach 120 trillion VND.

Officials of the State Bank still believe that the VND 110 trillion credit plan proposed by the Ministry of Construction is necessary for the real estate market, but the source of funding for the credit plan is causing problems.
