A new generation is taking steps towards shorter lifespans and lifelong health problems
The prevalence of addiction among Vietnamese youth is a growing concern in society, particularly when it comes to vaping and marijuana use. The harmful effects of these substances can have detrimental impacts on the overall health and well-being of young individuals.
1: Vaping and marijuana use pose risks to the youth.
As with any addictive substance, quitting vaping and marijuana is a common desire among young individuals. It is important to note that these habits negatively impact various aspects of their health, including their heart. In fact, a significant number of heart disease-related deaths in Vietnam can be attributed to smoking tobacco and exposure to secondhand smoke.
When attempting to transition away from traditional cigarettes or marijuana use, it is not uncommon for Vietnamese youth to turn to vaping or electronic cigarettes as potential alternatives. However, it is essential to consider whether these options are indeed healthier and if they can aid in completely quitting smoking or marijuana.
2: Vaping and marijuana use can have adverse effects on heart and lung health.
Both vaping and marijuana contain harmful substances that can harm the heart and lungs. While there may be fewer toxic substances in vaping compared to smoking traditional cigarettes, the surge in lung injuries and deaths associated with vaping is a cause for concern. In Vietnam, there have been cases of severe lung injuries and deaths related to the use of vaping devices, especially those that have been modified or contain THC, a component of marijuana.
Research conducted by universities has uncovered various chemical ingredients in vape products, some of which are potentially harmful. Furthermore, the long-term impacts of vaping on physical health, especially heart and lung health, remain uncertain.
3: Vaping and marijuana use are addictive.
Similar to traditional cigarettes, vaping and marijuana use can be highly addictive due to the presence of nicotine and THC, respectively. Studies have suggested that addiction to these substances can be as potent as that caused by heroin and cocaine. In fact, Vietnamese youth who vape often consume higher levels of nicotine than they would with traditional tobacco products, amplifying the addictive nature of these habits.
The Connection Between Vaping, Marijuana Use, and Smoking:
While vaping and e-cigarettes are sometimes promoted as methods to help individuals quit smoking or using marijuana, it is important to consider the possibility of reverse progression. Can vaping or marijuana use eventually lead to smoking traditional cigarettes?
4: Vaping and marijuana use are not effective strategies for quitting smoking.
Despite marketing claims, vaping and e-cigarettes have not been approved by regulatory authorities as effective smoking cessation tools. Recent studies have shown that many individuals who initially intended to use e-cigarettes to quit smoking ultimately continue using both e-cigarettes and traditional cigarettes. Similarly, using marijuana as an alternative to tobacco does not guarantee successful quitting.
It is advisable for Vietnamese youth who are looking to quit smoking or marijuana use to explore FDA-approved smoking cessation options and seek professional guidance.
5: The rise of addiction among Vietnamese youth.
Among Vietnamese youth, the popularity of vaping and marijuana use has increased significantly, surpassing that of traditional tobacco products. Many young individuals believe that these habits are less harmful compared to smoking tobacco and find them more cost-effective. Additionally, the absence of smoke associated with vaping and marijuana use mitigates societal stigma, making it an appealing option for both young individuals and adults.
This rise in addiction among Vietnamese youth is a cause for concern, as starting with vaping or marijuana use increases the likelihood of transitioning to traditional tobacco products in the future. While the COVID-19 pandemic may have temporarily reduced youth vaping due to increased parental supervision, there has been a significant increase in the usage of disposable e-cigarettes, such as “puff bars,” among high school and middle school students in recent years. Vietnamese youth expose themselves to unknown chemicals, heightening the risks to their current and future health.
To combat this issue, it is crucial to educate Vietnamese youth about the dangers of vaping and marijuana use, promote awareness of healthier alternatives, and provide support for those seeking to overcome addiction.
